Unscrew the bolts of the fuel sender access panel with the socket wrench. Remove the panel. This exposes the fuel pump. Pull out the pump's electrical connectors. Remove the clasp connecting the pump and the fuel line, using the wrench. Some fuel will leak from the exposed fuel line. Clean up any spilled fuel from the compartment with the rag.

The fuel pump is tested to be sure it isn't functioning. Should the fuel pump be faulty, it is removed from the tank through an access panel above the tank in the passenger compartment. The items you'll need for this is a new fuel pump and sending unit module from 1AAuto.com, 7mm and 15mm socket and ratchet, 11mm wrench, flat blade screwdriver, pliers, drip pan, hammer and a chisel, pick, paper towels, jack and jack stands, and depending on the condition of your fuel tank straps you may also need a reciprocating saw.
Replacing a fuel pump in the Malibu is not the simplest job. The fuel pump resides in the fuel tank, and there's no access panel through the trunk, as there are in some other vehicles, to quickly get to it. Despite this irritation, the process is rather straightforward, albeit tedious. Expect to spend an entire afternoon on the project.
