A dual pipe system with the same cross sectional area as a single pipe will flow less gas. The dual pipes have more wall area, which means more friction and boundary layer losses. Exhaust and intake design is far from intuitive. You need a flow bench, a dyno, and a lot of patience to design a good system. Good post Spinner.
The only thing Holley did to make it a "low rpm" torque builder was to add a crossover tube between the #4 and #8 cylinders on an otherwise single plane, divided plenum Street Dominator manifold. Even though I was relatively happy with it, I never had any other aftermarket dual plane 4bbl intakes to compare it directly to.

MPI doesn't like the inconsistent intake charges from dual-plane designs. Sure, it will tolerate it...but it's happier with a single-plane. The dual-plane intakes use longer runners to help the "carb signal", essentially the air pressure and wave pulses in the runners to provide a greater charge density into the cylinders at low speeds.
