As a general rule - if you have an HO based Jeep vehicle with an open cooling system (radiator cap up front), your spline count is 23. If you have a Renix based Jeep with a closed cooling system (coolant bottle on firewall), your spline count is 21.

I've been doing some research on the web about stuff like this lately. I'm looking to rebuild my np231 (possible chain slippage and/or other problem) into an 231HD/241 hybrid. If you do a search for "np231" in yahoo, you should come up with a bunch of different t-case/drivetrain sites. Talk to some of the tech guys on these sites.

These shafts have to be the same length.. The 249 input shaft will fit in the 231 case but you have to be sure of the right gear cut and also the spline count on the input shaft. There seems to be an older 21 count spline and the newer 23. The 249 and 231 I had both had the 23 spline count.

NV3550 to NP231 – In most cases a Jeep NP231 case will bolt up directly. The exception: A 231 from behind the 87-88 Peugeot 5sped and a 231 from a 2.5L 4cyl app will have a 21 spline input. This gear will need to be changed to the 23 spl part.

Also, you have to make sure you get the correct spline count... they made 21 and 23 spline shafts. I know when going from a 249 to the 231, you have to consider input shaft length differences. For the most part i believe it would be a pretty easy swap.

both the ax-15 and nv3550 have 23 spline output but the op is running an auto. the 32rh also has 23 spline output shaft. im not sure if it will work or not but there are a lot of places that will make an adapter so that it will. definatly going to need a new drive shaft. you will also loose the ability to just swap out a gear whenever the tires or gears are changed.
